GRIMSBY BUFFALOES 4-20 ALTRINCHAM ACES 9 NOVEMBER 2002
A Saturday night trip to Grimsby slightly delayed by the United City match. Whilst Billy Price (suspension) and Phil Keelan (injury) were missing, the good news was the return of Tim Dempsey after nine months out. Whilst Tim was the first to admit he wasn't fully fit, the game in Grimsby's undersize rink would be a good work out. Danny Higgin had his first start of the season in the Aces goal.
A year ago, Aces had been slow to adapt to the different way of play needed for a small rink but this time, they started well and didn't allow Grimsby to settle. Tim received a high stick penalty on his first shift but it was Aces who would take advantage moving clearly ahead with two short handed goals within a minute. Russ Richardson fired in the first along the ice from the point and Kevin Cassidy scored his first of the season from the face off circle soon after. A minute later, the puck had bobbled about the crease for an age before Tim got the scoring touch on it and another minute later, a Brian Worrall pass set up Jason Hewitt for number 4. Grimsby managed to pull one back with Luke Green beating Danny with a shot from the right. Aces fifth arrived in the seventh minute with a repeat of the Worrall Hewitt double act. After a lull in scoring, a neat one two between Nick Crawley and Jason left Nick in plenty of space to slot home. Grimsby scored again through Jason Haigh in a goalmouth scramble. A Simon Mills pass set up Steve Michie for his first Aces goal and Brian made it 8-2 slotting home a loose puck.
Although Grimsby were being outclassed, they were still competing but that didn't do them much good in a second period where they conceded five goals.

at the goalie and Tim Dempsey put in the loose puck.
10. Scored by Steve Michie in front of goal at the third attempt by the Aces.
11. Jason Hewitt set up Greg Allen in space for Greg to put into the top corner.
12. Luke Stretton skated onto a pass from Tim to shoot home.
13. Steve Daly won the puck on the blue line, freeing it for Arran Richardson
to shoot home.
The third period saw more Aces pressure and eight more unanswered goals. Phil
Verstappen had replaced Danny Higgin in goal for the last twenty minutes.

15. Aces were shorthanded and Jason Hewitt got to an iced puck first to pass
back for Greg Allen to net.
16. Tim Dempsey with a wrap around.
17. Tim stickhandled through to score.
18. Tim made an inch perfect (?) head high pass to Steve Daly in front who
gloved it down and scored.
19. Seven seconds later, Simon Mills took the puck in over the red line and
let fly to score his first goal of the season.
20. A passing move sets up Greg to lift it in.
That was the end of the Aces scoring but Grimsby added a couple for themselves as the clock ran down with a few niggles looking like they might have kicked off into fights. Referee Terry Young had done well to keep a lid on things. Back to the goals. Andrew Jenkins scored a powerplay goal from the blue line and then Luke Green rushed in to net a loose puck in the crease late on.
Stephen Elliott was a bit surprised to receive the Spirit of the Game award and would have preferred Steve Michie to have it.
